Why does Hair turn Grey?

So a common question that a lot of people ask is why does hair turn grey? Especially as this condition affects people of all ages not just seniors.

Some people start to get grey hair in their teens. This is termed premature graying.

Initially hair is white as it grows it is colored by a type of pigment that the body produces called melanin. The color that the melanin produces depends upon the distribution, type and amount of melanin in the middle layer of the hair shaft or cortex.

Hair has two types of pigments:
  • Eumelanin - which is a dark pigment
  • Phaeomelanin - which is a light pigment
When these two types of pigment are blended together they produce our natural hair color.

Melanin is made up of pigment cells called melanocytes which are found at the openings of the pores contained the hair follicles. As the hair is formed, these melanocytes inject melanin into cells containing keratin.

As we get older the bodies production of melanin reduces resulting in hair turning grey and eventually white.

Studies have shown that other factors other than age can play a role in the reduction of melanin produced by our bodies. Other factors include:
  • Genetic Defects
  • Hormone (imbalances)
  • Overweight or Underweight
  • Stress
  • Chemical Exposure
  • Pollutants
